Young Beethoven: The Spirited, Impassioned Virtuoso
When Beethoven arrived in Vienna, he took the city by storm with his fiery virtuosity and expressive depth.
In this all-Beethoven program marking 200 years since the composer’s death, fortepianist Daniel Adam Maltz brings the young composer-pianist back to life on the instrument Beethoven actually knew, played, and composed for — the Viennese fortepiano. Audiences will hear a rare glimpse into Beethoven’s sound world.
Beethoven shows a lighter side of his personality in his Seven Ländler, WoO 11, a collection of traditional folk dances. And, the recently-discovered Ländlerischer Tanz (Ländler-like Dance), is a short work that was hidden in plain sight among Beethoven’s manuscripts for over 230 years. Bagatelle translates to ‘trifle,’ but, in his characteristic way, Beethoven also finds opportunities in the Seven Bagatelles, Op. 33 to push beyond frivolity, using the fortepiano’s specific colors and timbre to facilitate emotional shifts between playfulness,…
