In Captivity
The work of In Captivity is a reflection on my experience caring for axolotls, specifically during the lockdown of the Covid-19 pandemic. Like most people existing during this time, I found myself at home with my loved ones, companions, and pets. Each spring my two axolotls Zoë and Wash would reproduce. I would be left with clutches of their eggs to care for and be filled with anxiety and guilt as every spring I would fail at rearing and maintaining their spawn, until the world shut down. The involuntary time taken off of work/school was consumed by my research, water changes, and allocating supplies to nurture a healthy crop of axolotls. The responsibility to care for an organism that is deemed critically endangered by the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) adds an extra layer of anxiety and guilt to dwell on. Of which I've chosen to address by creating a space for contemplation through visual art.
